Greek yogurt with honey

Each week Jane and I sit down to analyze what recipes we’ve done, what recipes we’d like to do, what we want to create, and what we need to edit/post. It’s these little meetings that make this website run.

This particular session was a funny one because we came to the realization that we overlooked a simple well-known popular dessert. It something we personally have a few times a week, yes I’m talking about: Greek yogurt with honey (γιαούρτι με μέλι – yiaourti me meli).

Sure, the Greeks have their baklava and galaktoboureko, but those are saved for special occasions or nights to splurge. To be honest, I would say the most popular dessert served after a meal in Greece is either a bowl of fresh fruit and/or this dish.

Greek yogurt has really become a major player in the yogurt scene in recent years. Here in the states, I’m pretty sure every producer has a Greek line. It stands to reason however, that there are some positives to this, as Greek yogurt is extremely healthy for you!

Health benefits of Greek yogurt

The health benefits of Greek yogurt are a plenty. A one serving cup (170g), which is normally how you’ll find them in the store, of 0% fat Greek yogurt is only about 100 calories. Furthermore, it carries only 7 grams of carbs and sugar and is packed with a powerful 18 grams of protein! The last is a huge plus to keeping you full and promoting lean muscle. Not to mention all the live probiotics is has that promote a healthy digestive system

I will admit that these figures change if you get ones added with fruit syrup or all the other stuff they now sell. Some of them are very good, but just watch the sugar levels. However, there are worse sweet things you could be eating.

Yogurt for dessert

As you’re reading this you may be thinking that it’s a bit strange to have yogurt for dessert. I know that the most popular time to have it, and the way it’s marketed here in the US, is for either breakfast or a healthy snack. However, it’s worth trying it after a dinner, and doing as the Greeks do.

It has the honey, so you’re getting sugar and something sweet, yet unlike most popular desserts, it’s natural and thus easy for your body to process. It’s also healthy for you, too.

I will be honest, it was hard for me to turn to fruit and this recipe when it came time for dessert. It’s all about getting your body used to craving sugar from natural sources rather than processed ones. It can be done!

This is a very good and extremely simple combination of your favorite Greek yogurt and your favorite honey. Give it a try tonight and let us know how you like it!

  2. I remember Greek yogurt & honey. We often also sprinkled it with chopped walnuts. Usually we ate it from the little ceramic bowls the yogurt shop made it in, the ones you returned when you bought more yogurt.
